Designing for hospitality

In the interior design for hospitality space, be it for a club or restaurant, the concept development is of utmost importance. The concept would determine how the space is being branded in the eyes of the public. But, on top of the concept idea, other considerations such as aroma and lighting are also critical to positioning the space. We look at some of these factors.

Aroma sets the right tone
Scents or fragrances are known to conjure certain moods in individuals; some scents could be redolent of past experiences and memories, causing us to feel nostalgic and reminiscent. A fresh citrusy scent could cause us to feel all flushed up and happy whereas a rose-tinted one might inspire the donning of a feminine dress. Similarly, aromas in hospitality spaces could instil moods in your guests. A signature scent would help to reinforce the positioning of a space.

Sway to the music
Just like a jazz or rock music piece can bring you into another era, music that is played in a hospitality establishment works to transport your guest to a time that is signature to it too. Music is also therapeutic, soothing moods. Imagine what a lullaby does to a sleepy toddler. Or rowdy music that works up the crowd in a concert. Choose the right genre of tunes that best describes the personality of the space.

Lighting as a mood changer
Different colours and their intensity can evoke various moods and ambiences. Colours can be used to conjure desired moods and emotions. See a room painted the colour of seas and you might just feel a whole calmer when you’re in it. Similarly, colour intensity also work to build up the emotion.

Brighter LEDs or fluorescents go with a harsher outlook and perhaps more suited to occasions where scrutiny is desired. Whereas dimmer rooms with the right décor can emanate a whole series of emotions such as mystery, intrigue, romance among others. Play with various lighting in different places to create the moods you want.
