Immersing in learning: Singapore Polytechnic Lecture Theatres

The first project after being awarded the term designer for one of Singapore's oldest and most established tertiary institutes is to revamp the lecture theatres for the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering (EEE).

An engineering theme is chosen for the design and is portrayed interestingly in a new light, giving a modern and dynamic take to how one views the engineering discipline. One lecture room is dressed in elements inspired by electronic circuitry whereas the other lecture room uses honeycomb as inspiration.

In the lecture theatres with the electronic circuitry theme, circuit diagrams with their nodes and channels feature in grandeur on the walls and ceiling. The acoustic wall covering is covered in black with lovely contrast to the circuit lines or channels that are painted in a chartreuse hue. The nodes, embellished with dim light bulbs, illuminate softly in olive and Caribbean-blue. On the ceiling, a cove feature stands out with the circuitry design elements continuing upwards.

For the lecture rooms with honeycomb theme, honeycombs are recreated as art, featuring widely as wall murals, and running right up to the ceiling for continuity. Standing vertically, the honeycombs are carved out in strips, creating a 3-d perspective; sprucing up the plain wall with a different edge. The earthy colour palette comprising beige and accents of deep orange, yellow lime, and blue brighten the room to a cosy atmosphere.

Unlike conventional lecture rooms, the interior likens to a 3-d visual theatre experience that stretches from floor to wall through to ceiling. Also, rather than displaying the lecture room number upfront at the entrance, we position it at the far end of the lecture room, boldly stamped against an abstract artwork.
