Home Away from Home: Mahkota Medical Centre

The redesign of Mahkota Medical Centre (Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC)), a 288-bed leading tertiary care hospital in Southern Peninsula, Malaysia started in 2009 and was completed in March 2012. The design and build of spaces within Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC) includes Main Reception, Health Screening Centre, Dental Centre, Rehabilitation Centre, Bakery & Café, Cardiac Catherisation Lab (Cathlab), Admin Office, and Retail Pharmacy.

The design focuses on creating a conducive, personable environment for the patient as well as reinforcing Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC)'s positioning as a premier, progressive, and dynamic healthcare services leader in the region. Kyoob-ID came up with a spatial planning that enhances the operational flow of departments, improving the staff's productivity and visitors' traffic alike. Clean, sleek lines are utilised to reflect Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC)'s dynamism and professionalism while fluid curves highlight a seamless operation at the hospital.

Clean, fluid lines are evident from the lobby where a spacious, curved reception table custom-designed in white solid surface and light-coloured timber laminate is well-placed to cater to all visitor enquiries. Subtly lit by warm LED lighting from below against a backdrop of white coloured back glass and marble stone wall feature, the ground-floor reception portrays a classy simplicity and yet personable warmth at the same time.

At the health screening centre at Level 5, sleek lines continue. Energy reverberates within through a colour palette of white, yellow, and lime green. Wall fixtures are composed of white, graphite, and maple veneer as well as silver laminate giving the area visual depth. Full-height murals featuring graphics of people, add a touch of dynamism and friendliness to the waiting area. Vinyl tile flooring with light timber finish complements the refreshing ambience.

At level 1, in the cathlab lounge, vibrant colours, green and yellow, peek from within, contrasting the waiting area that is dressed in a sea of woody and light grey tones. Simple stylish seating in brown hues and green accents provide ample, comfy seating for visitors and patients. Mural designs of people reinforce the human element and inject friendliness and warmth to the waiting experience.

The dental centre on ground floor is streaked in sleek lines of pure white laminate and maple veneer whereas the rehabilitation centre at basement 1 follows the tune of vibrant colour palette adopted for the rest of the hospital interior, in its choice of steel blue colour. Chosen for its connotation to nature and calming properties, the blue is amplified to its fullest effect in forms of large laminates at the centre's entrance and as painted walls within the therapy and fitness room.

Situated on ground level, the bakery & café is cloaked in fluid curves painted in royal aubergine against creamy white walls. The vibrant hue contrasts nicely a grey and white mosaic-styled homogeneous flooring and monotone furniture to portray an understated class in hospital dining.

Set in clean sharp lines of wenge and glossy white laminates, the retail pharmacy, located behind the lobby, is specially designed with clear signages and ample aisle space for shopping. Cream homogeneous tiles complete the understated look for this compact and organised cove of a shop.

Whether waiting or undergoing treatment, the patient can now immerse in a conducive and personable environment, one where he can experience trust, reliability and comfort. The refreshing interior has also set Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC) apart from other hospitals in the region.

As Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC) is an existing site, refurbishments were mainly carried out during operational hours, with minimum disruption to daily operational functions yet meeting the stringent stipulated requirements in renovation for hospitals.
