One could guess the other’s profession, interest, or personality type from the person’s dressing; well, apparently it rings true after all. Always immaculate and stylishly put-together, Emily Tan is not new to design and aesthetics, having been in the fashion retail industry for some 15 years. On top of her fashion sense, Emily is also warm and affable, always putting in a kind word for everyone.
1. How would you describe yourself?
I’m an optimistic and cheerful person and I enjoy interacting with people. I’m also quite meticulous so you can also say that I’m careful and detailed.
2. Tell us a little about your past work experience & background.
I had been in the fashion retail industry for a long time, almost 15 years. Design appeals to me, whether it’s fashion, jewellery, or interiors. Thus, when I was approached to join the interior design industry five years ago, I took the opportunity to widen my scope. The project management experience I gained during this time enabled me to pick up core skills and industry knowledge. When I was much younger, I had been exposed to interior design too; I took on some classes during my school holidays.
3. Tell us more about your role and responsibility.
As a design manager, I interact a lot with people: fellow colleagues, especially designers and of course clients too. My role is to understand clients’ requirements and needs for his or her new space so that I could accurately share and advise the designers on client’s expectation, design concept, as well as approach. One of the main responsibilities is to manage the client well, such that he or she is happy with the new environment, so as to be productive in work. When a client is happy with the space we’ve created, it gives me a sense of satisfaction and achievement.
4. What do you think is the most important attribute for your role?
Definitely passion!
5. What are some of the challenges you face and how would you handle them?
It is natural that we get to meet customers who are overly demanding. My job is to manage their expectations and find solutions to meet their objectives for the environment.
6. What do you do to relax?
Sleep...shop & EAT...!!Enjoy great food and wine....
7. If you’re not doing what you’re doing now, you’re likely to be a retail manager/ jewellery designer.
