A Chat with Kyoob-id’s Concept Designer, Phuchong Yamchomsuan
Our new designer, Puchong also called Boat by his friends, is like a burst of fresh air. His enthusiasm for all things novel is often infectious and refreshing. The 26-year-old Thai says that the experimental streak in him has meant that he is also quite a risk-taker but reveals that it is all worth it. His plucky personality aside, Boat is also pretty resilient. Once his mind is set on doing something, he’d finish it regardless of how long it would take. An extrovert who is always seen with a wide smile, Boat has his sights set on sailing at the current moment and is thinking of designing his very own sailboat. We say, rock the waves.
1. What inspires your work?
I like to watch movies and listen to post rock, indie and experimental music; listening to music never fails to inspire me. I also like to participate in music festivals for a taste of the environment. Travelling on a backpack and talking to people around me always energise me with new inspiration.
2. Tell us a little about your background.
I was a graduate from the School of Architecture and Design in Thailand. I took on some freelance work in 3d rendering and design & build after graduation. During this time, I also participated in design competitions to challenge myself. I came to Singapore after that.
3. Tell us more about your role and responsibility.
As a concept designer, I researched for ideas and developed the creative concept. Spatial planning is also part of my portfolio as a concept designer. Presenting the ideas and concept is part and parcel too. There are discussions after discussions. I feel that I am in a design class every day and I like it!
4. What do you think is the most important attribute for your role?
A combination of risk, experimentation, passion, and teamwork.
5. What are some of the challenges you face and how would you handle them?
My challenge is how to work with a lot of people because I’m not used to verbalising my thoughts. A lot of times, the ideas form in my head and I need to think of how to articulate these thoughts correctly. I also dream of being able to design and build something that is original and not done before; I have no idea how but I’m working on it.
6. What do you do to relax?
A glass of beer, cigarettes and good music.
7. If you’re not doing what you’re doing now, you’re likely to be an “Astronaut”. I want to die on the moon.
